Place & context

History

Imam al-Bukhari's memorial near Samarkand commemorates a scholar whose work became central to Sunni hadith learning. Born in Bukhara in the ninth century, he died in Khartang in 870, where his burial established the focus of later remembrance. The modern complex has developed through successive reconstruction campaigns rather than surviving as an unchanged medieval monument. A major memorial project accompanied the anniversary commemorations of 1998, and an international research center was established nearby in 2008. Official reporting in 2026 describes a further expansion, with new facilities for worship, interpretation and pilgrimage. These layers connect the scholar's remembered life with modern institutions devoted to education and national heritage. His Sahih collection provides the intellectual center of that memory. The atlas distinguishes his role as a hadith scholar from the Sufi lineages explored elsewhere in Uzbekistan, while recognizing their place within a wider religious landscape.
